BEWARE: I found Eurail Passes a ripoff. In addition to the steep price, you must also pay 'reservation fee' (often for a wagon mostly empty) that can add up to 50 to 100 Euros for a 10-day pass. In Italy, trains spend as much time in tunnels as out. Food is pricey onboard, and no smoking. Indeed, you see more from buses, also of cities, and they are more frequent. Check out bus fares--but not passes--too, even flights, or get point-to-point 2nd-class train ticket. If you want a train pass, get a 2nd-class pass at your home country; in Europe they offer only the pricey 1st-class pass! 		Sirman's (30 days of) Europe & the Mediterranean
