NOTE. I left out several famous black singers from the 1940s to 60s. Among them (in no order) are: Billy Holiday, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Etta James, Louis Armstrong, and Sammy Davis Jr. I listened to many of their works and decided to replace the genre they represented with a few names from a later era, for sure, including Gladys Knight. To me, her 'Midnight Train to Georgia,' for example, is the best of 'that kind' of music. I have her and others on a separate CD called 'Summer of 1976' to commemorate a specially nice summer holiday in Istanbul . . .

25_El Bimbo (1974, as nice vocal by Gigliola Cinquetti)
26_La Balanga (1975, Percy Faith & Band)
27_Caribbean (1979, Coupé Cloué (1925-1998) & Band from Haiti)
His best piece 'Colé Colé' (11 min.) I had listened to live in Santo Domingo is not on the Internet.
28_Nigerian Highlife of West Africa (1970s)
Years ago, I listened to a group called Osidivism in Lagos playing a blood-boiling beat that was a combo of disco-salsa, with lyrics in Hausa, Yoruba and barely-understandable Pidgin English with similar (sweet) sounds as in the Caribbean. They left an impression. By chance, I encountered the same group at the Starlight Club in Accra a year later. It was like meeting old friends. The music I heard then has been the best anywhere in Black-Africa since then. Alas, the group has dissolved. And African music has been changing, with more flare/show to appeal to Western tourists, and/or emulating Western beat. You have to go to local dumps in back alleys to hear the real thing. This link is not Nigerian Highlife, but it is a typical beat. I include it here for the memories . . .

Note: Some links on YouTube occasionally expire, but there are other links to the same music by the same singer and song. Search for them!
